35mm Cameras

What’s to become of the 35MM Camera? by James Cochrane
Many of us are pack rats. We save things until we need more room for other things. Then we make the decision to throw things away only to find out what seems like days later, those discarded items are worth lots of money.
There’s no true way to know now what something is going to be worth 30 years from now. Collectors are fickle people. It’s a morbid joke that most artists need to die before their art is worth money. This is why I decided to explore whether it is possible for 35MM cameras to be worth something in the future and whether you should hang onto them if you’ve got them.
Could the 35MM go the way of the record player? If so, then I would suggest hanging onto them because you could be sitting on a gold mine. People have rediscovered that vinyl records are the “true sound”. At least, this is the belief for these vinyl heads.
I thought for sure that my very first electric guitar was going to be one of those ones that kept appreciating in value. This is because it was a fairly rare brand and it was new. I saw that my other band mates were not buying this guitar so I thought, Jackpot! Well, from the research that I’ve done on the internet and from talking with modern guitar heads, I may be able to get what I initially paid for it. Not bad, but certainly not what I was expecting.
So it is really difficult to know what the value of an item we hold today is going to be worth in the future. As many of us have so painfully discovered, even items like stocks and bonds are not as easily valued as we had been led to believe in the past.
So hanging onto a 35mm Camera may be just as foolish an investment as just about anything else you can think of. But then again you may discover, sometime well into the future a resurgence of people that believe that film is the only way to go. If that is the case, you get the last laugh.

Mamiya AF 35mm f3.5 lens $1099 Using 120/220 film, the 90?angle of view is equivalent to an ultra-wide angle 22mm focal length (compared to 35mm format) and for digital capture it acts as a normal/wide angle lens. The Mamiya AF 35mm f/3.5 lens uses state-of-the-art lens design to maintain a high contrast and resolution continuously from infinity focus to the 13.75″ minimum focusing distance. The characteristic deep depth of field will be an advantage for many applications, including landscape, group and documentary photography. Each lens element is precisely polished and coated using Mamiyafs proprietary multi-coating process to increase light transmission, dramatically reduce flare, and ensure crisp clean whites and vibrant, yet natural colors. An independent manual focus/autofocus setting ring is located on the lens for quick changes in and out of autofocus while maintaining a natural camera balance. ?? |

Leica 35mm Summarit-M f/2.5 (6-bit) $2538 The LEICA SUMMARIT-M 35mm f/2.5 gives all users of range-finder cameras with a Leica M bayonet access to the smallest and lightest 35mm lens available, offering the outstanding image quality that is the hallmark of all Leica M lenses. On the digital LEICA M8, the LEICA SUMMARIT-M 35mm f/2.5 lens corresponds approximately to a 50mm standard lens. Able to deal effectively with all photographic situations, from vivid shots of people at medium range all the way to dramatic landscapes, its relatively short focal length and wide depth of field means even at medium apertures, there is no need for precise focusing. This makes it easy to take spontaneous shots as you go and capturing people in their element. The LEICA SUMMARIT-M 35 mm f/2.5 has six lens elements in four groups, arranged symmetrically with respect to the diaphragm. Three elements are made of special high refractive index glass with anomalous partial dispersion. This improves the image results and provides outstanding color correction that could never be achieved with normal glass. Light falloff is minimal, measuring only around 1.5 stops in the corners at full aperture in 35 mm format. Stopping down to 5.6 visibly reduces light falloff towards the periphery of the image. When used on the LEICA M8, virtually all vignetting is compensated electronically. Precise optical measurements reveal very slight barrel distortion, but in amounts that are negligible in almost all practical applications. ?? |
